Abstract

Postoperative functional symptoms such as pain, sleep disturbances, and anxiety are common yet often overlooked, despite their significant impact on recovery and quality of life. Currently, no systematic review has comprehensively assessed the burden of these symptoms in Vietnam. This study aimed to combine available evidence on postoperative symptoms among adults in Vietnam, analyze associated factors, and preliminarily evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, with literature searches performed across PubMed, Google Scholar, and grey literature sources from 2000 to April 2025. Thirteen studies involving 2,123 patients were included. The reported prevalence of postoperative pain ranged from 80.2% to 100%, sleep disturbances from 58.1% to 100%, and anxiety from 4% to 89.9%. Most studies used non-standardized assessment tools and did not stratify symptom severity. The variation in prevalence may reflect differences in surgical types, levels of care, and hospital settings. Findings indicate a high but insufficiently addressed burden of postoperative symptoms in Vietnam, highlighting the need for standardized assessment instruments and the development of tailored postoperative care protocols for specific patient groups.
