Abstract

No previous studies had been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in hospitalized patients in Vietnam. This study was conducted to determine the tobacco cessation rate from face to face counselling in hospitalized respiratory patients and evaluate the smoking cessation effectiveness from face to face counselling in hospital following with telephone counsellings post discharge in respiratory patients. This is a randomized intervention study, parallel comparison of two groups: usual intervention and active intervention. The study subjects were current or recent smokers in remission (within the past 1 month), admitted in Respiratory Center, Bach Mai Hospital from October 2017 to October 2020, Results showed that 143 patients, 73 received the usual intervention method, 70 received the active intervention method. At 6 months follow - up, 7 - days point prevalence cessation rate, 1 months, 3 months, 6 months continuous cessation rates (reported by a family member and validated by expired CO) are 65.75%; 65.75%; 64.38%; 46.58% respectively in the usual intervention group, and 81.43%; 81.43%; 81.43%; 64.29% respectively, in the active intervention group. In conclusion, patients in the active intervention group were more likely to quit smoking at 3 and 6 month follow - up than the usual intervention group with OR, 95% CI were 3.72 (1.56 - 8.85) and 2.45 (1.08 - 5.56), respectively.
