Abstract

Staghorn calculi are branched stones that occupy a large portion of the renal collecting system, filling the renal pelvis and extending into several or all calyces. The current preferrred treatment modality is percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). The study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of treating staghorn calculi using standard PCNL under ultrasound guidance at Nghe An Friendship General Hospital. This study included 62 patients with staghorn stones who underwent standard-tract PCNL between January 2023 and December 2024. Results: A single access tract was used in 58 patients (93.5%), while 4 patients (6.5%) required a second tract. The immediate postoperative stone-free rate was 77.4%, increasing to 88.5% at one month postoperatively. Minor complications occurred in 9.67% of case, and major complications were observed in 4.84%. The study shows that ultrasound-guided standard PCNL for the treatment of staghorn calculi is a safe and effective, with a low rate of complications and adverse events.
