Outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery at Vietnam National Eye Hospital (2017 – 2023)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study evaluated the outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) performed at the Vietnam National Eye Hospital between 2017 and 2023. A prospective descriptive study was conducted on 134 eyes of 105 patients who underwent FLACS from January 2017 to December 2023. Patients were followed up at 1 week (134 eyes), 1 month (134 eyes), 3 months (110 eyes), 1 year (96 eyes), 3 years (79 eyes), and 5 years (54 eyes) postoperatively. The mean age was 50.62 ± 14.98 years old, and 60% of patients were male. The proportion of eyes achieving uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/40 or better was 85.1% at 1 week and remained above 92% from 1 month through 5 years postoperatively. The mean spherical equivalent (SE) remained stable, ranging from −0.19 D to −0.20 D throughout the 5-year follow-up period. At 5 years, 90.7% of eyes were within ±0.50 D and 100% within ±1.00 D of the target refraction. 88.06% achieved complete anterior capsulotomy, with 100% of capsulotomies centered on the cornea. Intraoperative complications were absent in 82.84% of cases, while posterior capsule opacification was the most common late postoperative complication (11.94%). FLACS is a safe and effective surgical technique that provides favorable visual and refractive outcomes with excellent long-term stability.
