Abstract

Osteoporosis is a common complication in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, domestic data on bone mineral density (BMD) and related factors in this population remain limited. A study of 111 postmenopausal women with T2DM at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital from January 2024 to October 2024 showed a median menopausal age of 50 years old and an average menopausal duration of 17.6 years. The mean BMI was 23.7 ± 3.2 kg/m², with 29.7% classified as obese and 64% having central obesity. The median BMD at the lumbar spine and femoral neck was 0.814 g/cm² and 0.599 g/cm², respectively. The prevalence of osteoporosis was 39.6% at the lumbar spine, 45% at the femoral neck, and 61.3% at least at one site. Multivariate analysis did not identify age as significantly associated with reduced femoral neck BMD (p = 0.030). These findings indicate that osteoporosis is a prevalent complication in postmenopausal women with T2DM, particularly at the femoral neck.
