Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 172 hemodialysis sessions, corresponding to 55 patients undergoing hemodialysis at the Nephro - Urology Department, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, to describe the complication rate during hemodialysis sessions. Data were collected through direct interviews with patients and caregivers, as well as review of electronic medical records. The results showed that 45.3% of sessions had at least one complication. The first hemodialysis session had the highest complication rate, accounting for 32.1% of all sessions with complications. Patient-related complications were more frequent (39.0%) than technical complications (11.0%). Hypertension was the most common complication (30.2% of sessions), occurring mostly within the first hour of dialysis (10.5%). The rate of complications in hemodialysis remains high, especially patient-related complications and those occurring during the first dialysis sessions.
