Abstract

Skin ulceration is characterized by the loss of the entire epidermis and at least part of the dermis, forming a depressed lesion below the skin surface. Infection is the most common cause of skin ulcers. Helium-Neon (He-Ne) laser therapy is widely used in the management of non-healing wounds, particularly infected skin ulcers. This cross-sectional study evaluated the supportive effectiveness of external He-Ne laser irradiation in 81 patients with infected skin ulcers. Treatment outcomes were assessed using the DESIGN scoring system. The majority of patients was > 60 years old (61.7%), predominantly females at 60.5%. By day 14th, 10.0% achieved very effective healing, 65.4% good healing, and only 1.2% had poor response; no case showed non-response. Mild adverse effects, limited to localized erythema at the irradiation site, were reported in 7.4% of patients. He-Ne laser therapy demonstrated significant supportive effectiveness after 14 days of treatment, indicating that it is a safe and supportive modality for managing infected skin ulcers.
