Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of stress, analyze associated factors, and investigate the psychological care needs of outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at Thong Nhat Hospital from October 2023 to July 2024. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 400 retired, elderly males and females outpatients with T2DM receiving treatment at Thong Nhat Hospital. The findings revealed that 62.5% of patients did not achieve glycemic control targets (HbA1c ≥ 7%). Furthermore, 14.2% of patients exhibited signs of depression, and 23.2% experienced diabetes-related distress, of whom 16.5% reported moderate and 6.7% reported severe levels of distress. Treatment adherence was identified as a significant protective factor against stress, including medication adherence (OR = 0.22; 95% CI: 0.13 - 0.37), physical activity adherence (OR = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.20 - 0.60), and dietary adherence (OR = 0.39; 95% CI: 0.23 - 0.66). A notable 55.8% of patients expressed a need for psychological support regarding death and dying. Stress and psychological burden are prevalent issues among patients with T2DM. It is imperative to integrate psychological screening and support into routine clinical practice to ensure comprehensive patient management.
