Abstract

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) markedly reduces patients’ quality of life (QOL), yet evidence from mountainous provinces of Vietnam remains limited. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 193 patients aged ≥18 years old to describe the QOL of ESRD patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis and to identify associated factors. All patients had received hemodialysis for at least 3 months at Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital in 2025. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-36™) was used to assess QOL. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 with descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and multiple linear regression. The mean overall QOL score was 36.4 ± 9.5. Physical health (16.1 ± 13.9) and mental health (15.5 ± 8.5) domains were the lowest, while the symptoms/problems domain was the highest (59.3 ± 15.8). Multivariate linear regression showed that older age, lower educational attainment, unstable occupation, lack of health insurance, and insufficient family support were independent factors associated with poorer QOL (p < 0.05). Overall, the QOL of ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis at Gia Lai was at a moderate-to-low level, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive healthcare and social interventions to improve patient outcomes.
