Abstract

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent symptoms of inattention and excessive activity or impulsive behaviors that impair children’s academic performance and social functioning. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and evaluate intervention outcomes in 43 children aged 6 – 8 years old diagnosed with ADHD at Can Tho Children’s Hospital between June 2023 to May 2025. Inattentive presentation was predominent (44.2%). The prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders was relatively low, including oppositional defiant disorder (4.7%) and intellectual disability (2.3%). After one month of treatment with Risperidone and behavior modification, 31 children returned for follow-up (72.1%), while 12 children were lost to follow-up (27.9%). On average, the children showed an improvement of 9.94 ± 5.83 points compared to their pre-treatment scores. The mean symptom scores decreased across all groups. Parental educational attainment is associated with the improvement in Vanderbilt Scale scores pre- and post-treatment (p < 0.05). This is an important preliminary finding that suggests the need for further research with a larger sample size.
