Abstract

This study evaluates the preliminary treatment outcomes for patients with subacute thyroiditis at Hanoi Medical University Hospital. An observational study was conducted on 41 patients with subacute thyroiditis who received treatment for 8 - 12 weeks. The mean age was 43.7 ± 8.9 years, and the female-to-male ratio was 4.1:1. After 2 - 4 weeks of treatment, symptoms of thyroidal pain, inflammation, and both clinical and laboratory signs of thyrotoxicosis improved markedly. All patients treated with NSAIDs (meloxicam) continued to experience cervical pain after 2 - 4 weeks. The group receiving methylprednisolone had a significantly higher rate of complete pain resolution compared with the meloxicam group (p = 0.000). After one treatment course, the proportions of patients with persistent thyrotoxicosis, euthyroidism, and hypothyroidism were 4.9%, 85.3%, and 9.8%, respectively. In conclusion, subacute thyroiditis most commonly affects middle-aged individuals and is more prevalent in women. Patients treated with corticosteroids experienced faster symptom relief than those receiving non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The rates of remission and hypothyroidism after one treatment course were 80.5% and 9.8%, respectively.
