High-sensitivity C-reactive protein and cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract
The study evaluates and describes the relationship between hs-CRP levels and several cardiovascular risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted on 102 patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated at the Endocrinology Department and Endocrinology Clinic of Hanoi Medical University Hospital. The results showed that hs-CRP levels did not differ by sex or age; however, hs-CRP was significantly elevated in patients with hypertension (p = 0.015) and overweight/obesity (p = 0.003). hs-CRP levels were correlated with fasting blood glucose (r = 0.294; p = 0.002) and HbA1c (r = 0.374; p < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis identified BMI (p = 0.016) and HbA1c (p = 0.003) as two factors independently associated with hs-CRP. Conclusion: Serum hs-CRP is associated with low-grade inflammation and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes, particularly BMI and HbA1c.
