Abstract

Given the complex interplay between the thyroid gland and the gonadal axis, evidence suggests there are substantial thyroid function changes across reproductive stages, especially in postmenopause. However, the necessity of routine thyroid screening in this population remains controversial. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 288 postmenopausal female ranged from 50 to 90 years old to determine factors associated with hypothyroidism in postmenopausal women, with a particular focus on gynecologic history. Diabetes mellitus was associated with an increased odds of hypothyroidism (OR = 2.94; p = 0.009). The odds of hypothyroidism were 2.27 times higher in individuals with hypertension (p = 0.043). Multiparity (≥ 6 pregnancies) were significantly associated with a higher likelihood of hypothyroidism (OR = 3.0; p = 0.017). Thyroid dysfunction is common among postmenopausal women and is associated with diabetes, hypertension, and reproductive history. Routine thyroid screening is recommended for high-risk postmenopausal women to facilitate early diagnosis and optimal management.
