Surgical treatment of chronic common carotid obstruction: Case report and literature review

Abstract
Chronic common carotid artery occlusion is a rare disease that can trigger stroke. Optimal treatment is still controversial between medical treatment and surgical revascularization. We report the case of a 69-year-old male patient with right common carotid artery occlusion, good collateral circulation, and recurrent transient ischemic attacks despite optimal medical treatment. The patient underwent right common carotid artery grafting with an artificial artery. After surgery, the patient's condition was stable and cerebral perfusion improved. The report aims to summarize the medical literature on the diagnosis and optimal treatment of common carotid artery occlusion.
