Nutritional status and related factors in inpatients at 115 Nghe An Surgical Hospital

Abstract
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to assess the nutritional status of inpatients at 115 Nghe An Surgical Hospital from February 2025 to October 2025. 306 study subjects were measured for anthropometric variables and interviewed using a pre-designed questionnaire. Nutritional status was assessed by Body Mass Index (BMI) and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). The results showed that the malnutrition rate according to the WHO BMI classification was 11.44%, overweight and obesity accounted for 10.78% and 1.31%, respectively. Based on SGA, 54.9% had mild and moderate malnutrition (SDD) 10.78% had severe malnutrition. The rate of malnutrition in female patients was 75.55%, higher than in male patients (59.9%), the difference was statistically significant (OR = 2.06; 95%CI: 1.22 - 3.46; p < 0.05). Patients without anemia had a lower risk of SDD according to SGA than those with anemia, the difference was statistically significant (OR = 0.31; 95%CI: 0.1 - 0.92; p < 0.05). The rate of malnutrition in inpatients is relatively high according to SGA. It is recommended to strengthen screening and nutritional assessment at time of admission and, in parallel, build an early, personalized nutritional intervention program to improve nutritional status and shorten treatment time for patients.
