Abstract

The study was conducted to describe the clinical characteristics of non-suicidal self-injury behavior in adolescents. The study was conducted at National Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital from February 2025 to July 2025 using a cross-sectional method on inpatients aged 10 - 19 years. Of the 157 people studied, 70 patients (44.6%) had non-suicidal self-injury behavior. The most commonly used behavior was cutting and banging or hitting oneself (62.9%). Burning was the least commonly used behavior (2.9%). The behavior appeared earliest when children were 5 years old, often performed when they were alone (72.9%). The time from intention to execution was mostly less than 1 hour (71.4%). The results help provide information about clinical manifestations to help patients and their families detect early signs of this behavior and seek professional help as soon as possible.
