Effectiveness of storytelling intervention on lifestyle behavioral changes among hypertensive patients in Hung Yen province in 2019-2022
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a storytelling intervention model on lifestyle changes among hypertensive patients in Hung Yen province. A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted on 671 patients in 16 communes from 2019 to 2022. The intervention group (n = 340) received DVDs featuring real-life experience in lifestyle modification supporting hypertension management, while the control group (n = 331) received standard educational materials. Data were analyzed using the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) model. Results after 12 months showed significant improvement in salt reduction behaviors in the intervention group compared to the control group. Specifically, the rate of "adding salt during cooking" decreased with a net intervention effect of 10.8 percentage points (p = 0.014); "dipping food in sauce/salt" decreased by 10.9 percentage points (p = 0.021). Although smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity behaviors did not show statistically significant differences, improvements were observed in both groups, with greater improvements in the intervention group. In conclusion, the storytelling intervention is effective in reducing salt intake habits and suitable for implementation at the grassroots level.
