Optical coherence tomography of fovea after surgical management for retinal detachement associated with macular hole

Abstract

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a powerful tool to evaluate macular disorder. This is an observational prospective study aimed to assess the closure of macular hole by OCT and factors related to anatomical success after surgery in 27 eyes with retinal detachment associated with macular hole and treated by vitrectomy with inverted inner limited membrane flap technique. After surgery to correct retinal detachment, all retinas were successfully reattached. The macula holes were closed in 17 eyes (63%). In all cases we recorded the disruption of the inner and outer segment junction and/or the outer limited membrane. The axial length, the presence of posterior staphyloma and durations of symptoms were significantly correlated with hole closure. In conclusion, the visual acuity significantly improved post - operation but we did not find any correlations between postoperative visual acuity and macular closure.
