Abstract

We report a case of a male neonate, one of twins conceived by in vitro fertilization, delivered by cesarean section at 36 weeks of gestation, with a history of prolonged rupture of membranes. The infant was admitted for neonatal sepsis and meningitis, and subsequently developed peritonitis due to a perforated appendix. Timely surgical intervention combined with intensive supportive care resulted in a favorable outcome. This case emphasizes the importance of close monitoring of gastrointestinal symptoms in neonates with prolonged infection, as neonatal appendicitis is an extremely rare condition with nonspecific clinical manifestations, often leading to delayed diagnosis and progression to peritonitis.
