Nutritional status and handgrip strength of cancer patients before total gastrectomy at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital in 2023 - 2024
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to describe the nutritional status and handgrip strength of patients before total gastrectomy for gastric cancer at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 143 gastric cancer patients indicated for total gastrectomy at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital's Tan Trieu facility from April 2023 to April 2024. The results showed that the percentage of patients with malnutrition and overweight/obesity (based on BMI) were 22.4% and 4.9%, respectively. Using the CAMRY EH101 electronic handgrip, the majority of patients in the study (71.3%) experienced reduced arm muscle strength. According to the GLIM - a malnutrition diagnostic tool - the percentage of patients with malnutrition was 70.6%. According to several biochemical indicators, the number of patients with malnutrition based on albumin was 21%; based on lymphocyte count was 30.8%. 43.4% of gastric cancer patients had anemia. Thus, patients undergoing total gastrectomy for cancer often have poor nutritional status prior to surgery. Early screening and assessment of the patient's nutritional status are necessary to develop a timely nutritional intervention plan.
