Abstract

In the context of universities increasingly adopting diverse admission methods to ensure the quality of incoming students, assessing the relationship between admission methods and academic performance of medical students at Hanoi Medical University is essential to provide a foundation for developing effective admission policies and improving the quality of education. As such, we conducted a study on the Learning Effectiveness of Medical Students by Admission Methods at Hanoi Medical University. This retrospective cross-sectional study included 796 students admitted to the Medicine program at Hanoi Medical University during the 2021 – 2022 period. There were three methods used to select students to Hanoi Medical University: a) national high school graduation scores, b) combined national high school graduation scores with certificate of English-French proficiency and c) direct admission. 71.48% was admitted based on the national high school graduation exam results. Among students admitted in 2021, those admitted through the combined admission method using English–French language certificates had the highest average first-year GPA (8.01/10). In both cohorts, students admitted through the direct admission method achieved the best academic performance among the three admission methods (7.86/10 for the 2021 – 2027 cohort and 8.19/10 for the 2022 – 2028 cohort). In conclusion, the admission method may serve as a predictor of learning effectiveness among medical students at Hanoi Medical University.
