Validity and reliability of a questionnaire assessing knowledge among caregivers of children with asthma

Abstract
Asthma is a common chronic disease in children; however, there remains a lack of specialized method to measure asthma knowledge among caregivers. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the validity and reliability of a questionnaire assessing asthma knowledge at Children’s Hospital 2. The questionnaire was developed based on a literature review and clinical guidelines, then underwent content validation by a panel of six experts using the Item Content Validity Index (I-CVI), Scale Content Validity Index/Average (S-CVI/Ave), and Scale Content Validity Index/Universal Agreement (S-CVI/UA). Reliability was assessed through a pilot study (n = 30) and a formal study (n = 88) using the Kuder–Richardson 20 (KR-20) coefficient and split-half reliability. The final version consisted of 30 dichotomous items covering five knowledge domains. The results demonstrated high content validity (I-CVI ≥ 0.83; S-CVI/Ave = 0.99; S-CVI/UA = 0.96) and good reliability (KR-20: 0.81 – 0.84; Split-Half: 0.78 – 0.84; p < 0.05). The tool can be further refined for use in pediatric research and clinical practice.
