Assessment of changes in peripheral blood cell counts in Dengue fever patients at Vinmec Hai Phong International Hospital, 2023 - 2024

Abstract
A retrospective, descriptive longitudinal study was conducted on 194 patients aged ≥ 15 years old diagnosed with Dengue Fever (DF) at Vinmec Hai Phong Hospital during 2023 - 2024. Results: Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia were observed in 89.69% and 94.84% of patients, respectively. The lowest white blood cell count occurred on day 4 (3.24 ± 0.14 G/L), the lowest platelet count on day 6 (60.67 ± 46.07 G/L), and the highest hematocrit on day 6 (0.421 ± 0.003 L/L). The proportion of atypical lymphocytes (AL) appeared in 97.94% of patients. The DF group with warning signs had a higher percentage of atypical lymphocytes (11.76 ± 10.91% vs. 9.53 ± 9.93%; p = 0.002) and lower platelet counts (p < 0.001) compared to the uncomplicated DF group. A moderate inverse correlation was found between platelet count and AST levels (r = –0.42; p < 0.01). Conclusion: Hematological parameters follow a tightly regulated kinetic pattern. The proportion of atypical lymphocytes has potential as a supportive marker for disease severity classification, but optimal cutoff values need to be established through prospective studies.
