Abstract

A study involving 80 pediatric patients diagnosed with severe Dengue according to the 2023 Ministry of Health criteria, and treated at Can Tho Children’s Hospital, yielded the following results: the mean age was 10.9 years old, males accounted for 56.3%, and overweight/obese children comprised 31.3%. The most common clinical symptoms were abdominal pain (63.7%), subcutaneous hemorrhage (52.5%), and vomiting (48.8%). The median platelet count was 25,500 cells/mm³, and the mean hematocrit was 46.3%. Analysis demonstrated that the pSOFA score holds prognostic value for severe clinical outcomes: a 1-point increase in the pSOFA score was associated with a 3.5-fold increase in the odds of requiring mechanical ventilation (OR = 3.518; 95% CI: 1.296 – 9.555; p = 0.014; AUC = 0.771) and a 2.1-fold increase in the odds of requiring NCPAP (OR = 2.122; p = 0.009; AUC = 0.685). Furthermore, a higher pSOFA score elevated the odds of prolonged hospitalization (> 7 days) (OR = 1.910; p = 0.015; AUC = 0.659). In conclusion, the modified pSOFA score is a valuable prognostic tool for predicting clinical outcomes in pediatric patients with severe Dengue.
