Clinical, subclinical characteristics and some factors associated with treatment duration of acute bronchiolitis

Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 170 patients with acute bronchiolitis at the Respiratory Department of Can Tho Children’ Hospital from August 2023 to July 2025. The results showed that hospital admissions due to acute bronchiolitis increased during the rainy season, reaching the highest level in August (28 patients, accounting for 16.4%). The male:female ratio was 1.42:1, with 58.8 % were children under 6 months old. Cough, wheezing, tachypnea, chest retractions, absence of fever, and poor feeding were common symptoms in children with bronchiolitis. Blood tests showed that most white blood cell counts were within the normal range, and chest X-ray mainly showed simple hyperinflation. Severe disease on admission (PR = 3.20; 95% CI: 1.00 - 8.99), malnutrition (PR = 4.44; 95% CI: 1.56 - 12.40), and corticosteroid treatment (PR = 3.17; 95% CI: 1.14 - 9.05) were factors associated with prolonged hospitalization over 10 days (p < 0.05).
