Blood and blood product transfusion in the first 6 months of 2021 at Hanoi Medical University Hospital

Abstract

The objective of the study to report blood products transfusion activity in the first six month in 2021 at Ha Noi Medical University hospital. Study method: Cross-sectional descriptive. Results: The total blood product units used are 3655 units, mostly are red blood cell units (73.1%), Frozen fresh plasma (17.6%), and platelets units (8.2%). O blood group come to be the highest percentage (46%), next is B group and A group (32.8% and 16.6%). Transfusion of blood and blood products occurred the most in March (754 units), the least in February (478 units) and May (547 units). The departments with the most blood product transfusions are Anesthesiology and Resuscitation (27.6%), Emergency and Intensive Care (26.6%), and Internal Medicine (13.9%). We suggest that adequate planning should be arranged to manage unexpected situations that could affect the blood sources and blood supply. Development of additional support solutions is needed to reduce the need for blood transfusion and be more proactive in blood transfusion.
