Prevalence and associated factors of metabolic syndrome in patients with rheumatoid arthritis at Cho Ray Hospital

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a prevalent comorbidity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), arising from chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and the impact of therapeutic interventions. Beyond systemic metabolic disturbances, MetS is associated with numerous adverse outcomes, directly escalating the disease burden and cardiovascular risk. This cross-sectional study of 151 RA patients (age ≥ 18) at Cho Ray Hospital revealed a MetS prevalence of 39.1%, which remained high regardless of disease activity levels. Consequently, metabolic screening is strongly indicated for high-risk subgroups, particularly elderly females (age ≥ 60), overweight or obese individuals (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²), and people with low LDL-c levels.
