Abstract

Visual impairment is one of the common diseases caused by many influencing factors. The objective of the study was to describe the degree of visual impairment in cataract patients visiting Hanoi Medical University hospital and analyze some influencing factors. This is a cross-sectional descriptive research method, from August 2019 to July 2020, of 187 patients treated at Hanoi Medical University. The results showed that the mean age of cataract patients was 66.84 ± 8.067. There were 55 male patients (29.41%) and 132 female patients (70.59%). Mean VF-14 score in cataract patients was 72.23 ± 21.59. The rate of cataract patients with impaired visual activity is 89.84% in the following levels: Minimum (8.56%), mild (28.88%), moderate (44.39%), severe (3.21%) and very severe (4.81%). Age, degree of cataract and education level have an influence on visual impairment in cataract patients (p < 0.05). Gender, income, living situation, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease had no significant effect on visual impairment in cataract patients (p > 0.05). The investigation of visual impairment in cataract patients using the VF-14 toolkit and analysis of some factors affecting visual activity in cataract patients gives reliable results, and is effective and essential.
