Assessment of cardiovascular risk in patient with ankyslosing spondylitis using the SCORE2 risk algorithm

Abstract

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease, is a subtype of axial spondyloarthritis disorders. The disease affects the joints, spine, and extra-articular organs. Patients with AS have an increased cardiovascular risk due to the combined effects of systemic inflammation and traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Assessment of cardiovascular risk in patients with AS will optimize risk factor management and improve disease prognosis. This study was conducted on 69 patients with ankylosing spondylitis at the Rheumatology Center of Bach Mai Hospital from August 2024 to July 2025. Among the participants, 44.9% had low-to-moderate cardiovascular risk, 40.6% had high cardiovascular risk, and 14.5% had very high cardiovascular risk. The 10-year cardiovascular risk in patients with AS was associated with age, disease activity, disease duration, gender and CRP-hs level. As such, cardiovascular risk assessment should be routinely performed in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
