Quality of life by treatment modality in patients after surgery for thyroid carcinoma

Abstract
This study aimed to compare quality of life and identify associated factors among patients after surgery for thyroid carcinoma according to treatment modality. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 202 patients who had undergone surgery for at least 6 months and were followed up at Hanoi Medical University Hospital from November 2020 to October 2021. Data were collected from medical records and interviews using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire; group comparisons and multivariable linear regression were performed. Patients were divided into three groups: lobectomy (71 cases), total thyroidectomy (48 cases), and total thyroidectomy combined with I-131 therapy (83 cases). The mean age was 43.65 ± 12.09 years old; females accounted for 86.1%; papillary carcinoma was the predominant histological type (95.5%) and stage I disease accounted for 85,6%. The mean functional scores were 97.1 ± 3.7, 91.9 ± 6.8, and 83.7 ± 6.8, respectively. The corresponding symptom scores were 3.3 ± 3.1, 6.1 ± 3.2, and 8.2 ± 5.1, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.001). Multivariable regression showed that gender, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, disease stage, treatment modality, number of I-131 treatments, and postoperative thyroid dysfunction were negatively associated with the overall quality-of-life score.
