Abstract

This study aimed to assess the validity of the Vietnamese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in screening of dementia among community-dwelling elderly. One-hundred and eleven older adults were randomly selected in 3 communes of Ba Vi district, Hanoi. All participants were screened with MMSE and then assessed using a neuropsychological battery to diagnose dementia according to DSM-5 criteria. The area under the ROC curve of the MMSE test is 0.89 (95%CI: 0.78 - 1). The optimal cut-off point of MMSE for detecting dementia was defined at 19/20 with a sensitivity of 0.75 and a specificity of 0.93. At the cut-off point of 23/24, the sensitivity and specificity of MMSE were 0.88 and 0.72, respectively. The prevalence of dementia was 32.4% using the MMSE cut-off point of 23/24 and 7.2% according to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. The MMSE is a good instrument for screening dementia among the elderly population in Vietnam with a cut-off point of 23/24.
