The relationship between tooth wear and enamel craze lines in elderly veterans

Abstract
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 109 veterans (2,346 teeth) in Quang Binh Province to evaluate the distribution characteristics and the association between enamel craze lines (ECL) and the Tooth Wear Index (TWI). Among 109 patients, there were approximately 2:1 ratio of males to females. The prevalence of tooth wear was 80.18%, predominantly at TWI grade 1 (41.82%), with the highest occurrence observed in the molar group (87.7%). The prevalence of ECL was 55.28%, occurring most frequently in the maxillary incisors (76.8%) and mandibular incisors (75.1%). A non-linear association was identified between these two conditions. The prevalence of ECL decreased at advanced levels of tooth wear (TWI grades 3–4), whereas no statistically significant association was found between ECL and mild-to-moderate tooth wear (TWI grades 1–2). Male participants were more likely to exhibit ECL than female participants. Males had a statistically significantly higher risk of tooth wear and enamel craze lines compared to females (p < 0.001). There was a nonlinear relationship between the two types of lesions; teeth with a TWI score of 2 had the highest risk of enamel craze lines (OR = 1.94; p < 0.001). A TWI score of 2 and male gender are factors associated with an increased risk of enamel craze lines.
