Abstract

At the department of Hepatitis, Cho Ray Hospital, 38-47% of people was diagnosed with hepatitis B among the total examined and hospitalized cases annually. This study was conducted with the aim of assessing knowledge of and practice for prevention of hepatitis B virus of newly hospitalized patients at Cho Ray Hospital.  This was a cross-sectional study combined with quantitative and qualitative measures; the study used prepared and structured questionnaires to interview newly admitted 231 patients aged 18 years and older. A qualitative study was applied with a focus group discussion with 10 patients and two in-depth interviews of health managers. The study’s results showed that patients with correct knowledge and practice of hepatitis B virus prevention were 48.1% and 37.2% respectively.  Those patients who had good knowledge would have 2.6 times better practice for the prevention of hepatitis B infection than those with poor knowledge.  There was a significant relationship between knowledge of and practice for the prevention of hepatitis B infection.  The study recommends for developing a plan and implementation of consultancy on the prevention of hepatitis B virus infection to patients regularly, focusing on nutrition and hepatitis B vaccination.
