HPV awareness among medical students: From prevention misconceptions to knowledge gaps regarding Human Papillomavirus (HPV) related diseases in males

Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 727 students (aged 19-25) at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, from March 2025 to March 2026. A questionnaire adapted from the KAPPAS scale was used to assess HPV knowledge, identify knowledge gaps, and examine the association between HPV knowledge and vaccination practice. Data were collected using paper-based and online questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regression. The median knowledge score was 26 (IQR: 23 – 28)/35. However, 70.0% of students believed that personal hygiene could prevent HPV infection. Cervical cancer was the most commonly recognized HPV-related disease (79.1%), whereas penile cancer was identified by 44.0% of students. Overall, 33.3% had received at least one HPV vaccine dose. Higher HPV knowledge scores were independently associated with higher odds of HPV vaccination (aOR = 1.07; 95% CI: 1.02 – 1.13; p = 0.004). Comprehensive and gender-neutral HPV communication should be strengthened to improve vaccination compliance.
