Effects of Gymnema sylvestre supplementation on glucose tolerance, blood lipids and liver damage in experimental diabetic mice
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study evaluated the impact of Gymnema sylvestre supplementation on glucose tolerance, blood lipids and liver damage in an experimental diabetic mouse model. A total of 48 male Swiss mice were divided into four groups: Group 1 - control, Group 2 - obese, Group 3 - diabetic, and Group 4 - diabetic with dietary intervention. Results of the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IPGTT) showed that Groups 2 and 3 had significant impaired glucose tolerance, particularly Group 3 with high blood glucose levels and slow decrease. Group 4, supplemented with Gymnema sylvestre, showed lower glucose increases and faster decrease, indicating improved glucose tolerance. Simultaneously, cholesterol, triglyceride, ALT, and AST levels were significantly reduced compared to Groups 2 and 3, reflecting a trend towards improved lipid metabolism and a significant reduction in liver damage (fatty degeneration, inflammation, structural disorders) in Group 4. The results suggest that Gymnema sylvestre has the potential to support the control of glucose metabolism disorders, lipid metabolism disorders, and reduce liver damage in experimental diabetes mellitus.
