Intracapsular tonsillectomy in children: A review of outcomes
Main Article Content
Abstract
Intracapsular tonsillectomy has increasingly been considered as an alternative to total tonsillectomy in children due to its potential of reducing postoperative morbidity. A PRISMA-ScR scoping review was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar to accrue synthesize evidence on the clinical outcomes of intracapsular tonsillectomy in patients aged 0 – 18 years old. Analysis of 16 studies suggested that intracapsular tonsillectomy was associated with reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery, and lower secondary hemorrhage rates compared with extracapsular tonsillectomy. Several studies reported no significant differences in OSA/SDB outcomes compared with extracapsular tonsillectomy, with low revision rates. However, higher revision risk was observed in younger children and patients with complex comorbidities. Intracapsular tonsillectomy may offer advantages in postoperative recovery and reduced hemorrhagic complications in appropriately selected pediatric patients
