Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and evaluate its association with clinical and paraclinical characteristics among 72 male gout patients treated at Thai Binh General Hospital from October 2025 to March 2026. The prevalence of MetS according to the IDF (2005) criteria was 48.6%. Gout patients with MetS exhibited significantly higher BMI, visual analog scale (VAS) scores, and numbers of swollen and painful joints compared to the non-MetS group (p < 0.05). Notably, a history of glucocorticoid abuse in gout treatment dramatically increased the prevalence of MetS up to 81.8%, and fasting blood glucose concentration was found to be closely associated with MetS (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the comorbidity rate of MetS among gout patients at Thai Binh General Hospital is remarkably high. The presence of MetS significantly exacerbates acute gouty arthritis and maintains a close relationship with obesity, glucocorticoid abuse, and blood glucose disorders, emphasizing the need for comprehensive metabolic management in these patients.
