Double-J stent-related symptoms and quality of life after retrograde ureteroscopic lithotripsy for ureteral stones
Main Article Content
Abstract
This descriptive cross-sectional study examined stent-related symptoms (SRS), quality-of-life (QoL) and associated factors among 227 patients with double-J ureteral stents after ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS) from May 2025 to October 2025 at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital. Data were obtained using the Ureteral Stent Symptom Questionnaire (USSQ); SRS was recorded in 100% of patients, with a mean of 4.36 ± 1.13 manifestations per patient. The most frequent manifestations were any-frequency pain on the USSQ (99.1%), temporary cessation of sexual activity during stent placement (71.8%), gross hematuria (62.6%), and nocturia ≥3 times per night (58.1%). The two USSQ domains with the highest burden were urinary symptoms (24.44 ± 5.77) and body pain (9.34 ± 3.89). Overall, 40.6% of patients had fair/poor overall QoL. Self-reported pain on a binary screening question was associated with a lower likelihood of good QoL in both men (adjusted OR 0.34; 95% CI: 0.13 – 0.92) and women (adjusted OR 0.37; 95% CI: 0.15 – 0.91). Structured discharge counselling should include expected symptoms, pain-control guidance, warning signs, and follow-up instructions during double-J stent placement.
