Reasons and characteristics of methamphetamine use among patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City: A qualitative study
Main Article Content
Abstract
Methamphetamine use among patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is a growing concern due to its potential to compromise treatment outcomes and complicate the issue of opioid use disorder. This study examines the causes and characteristics of methamphetamine use among patients across 15 MMT clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. We conducted a qualitative approach, with data collected via 25 in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings indicate that methamphetamine initiation was primarily driven by curiosity, whereas continued use was sustained by the need for emotional regulation, enhanced alertness, work productivity, and sexual function. Notably, feeling bored with life and the high feeling from the drug rendered continuous abuse. Methamphetamine use patterns were not static but changed frequently, depending on the method of use, dose, frequency, financial situation, drug supply, drug purity, group or solitary use context, and post-use experiences.
