Factors associated with early childhood caries among 4-year-old children in Hanoi

Abstract
This study aims to identify factors associated with early childhood caries (ECC) among 4-year-old children. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 296 parent-child pairs recruited from several preschools in Hanoi. The findings indicated that children with significant dental plaque accumulation had a 4.11-fold increased risk of developing caries compared to those without plaque. Children who frequently consumed snacks had a 14.39-fold increased risk of caries compared to the non-frequent snacking group. Additionally, the presence of deep pits and fissures on tooth surfaces was associated with a 4.09-fold increased risk of caries. In conclusion, frequent snacking, excessive plaque accumulation, and deep pits and fissures were identified as significant risk factors for ECC. The study also noted a significant correlation between parents' mindsets toward oral health care and the severity of early childhood caries (S-ECC) in children.
