Short-term outcomes of connective tissue graft in the treatment of post-orthodontic gingival recession in mandibular incisors

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and evaluate the short-term outcomes of connective tissue graft surgery for post-orthodontic gingival recession in mandibular incisors. A prospective uncontrolled clinical intervention study was conducted on 30 patients with 60 Miller Class I/II recession sites. Clinical parameters, including recession depth (RD), clinical attachment level (CAL), recession width (RW), width of keratinized tissue (WKT), and gingival thickness (GT), were assessed before surgery and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. After 3 months, RD, CAL, and RW significantly decreased, whereas WKT and GT significantly increased compared with baseline (p < 0.05). Complete root coverage was achieved in 45.00% of Miller Class I sites and 5.00% of Miller Class II sites (p = 0.001). Baseline WKT showed a strong negative correlation with recession depth reduction after 3 months (r = -0.710; p < 0.001). Connective tissue graft surgery using the tunnel technique improved clinical parameters, increased keratinized tissue width and gingival thickness in mandibular incisors after orthodontic treatment.
