Cytogenetic abnormalities detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization and associated factors in patients with multiple myeloma

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 66 patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma at Nghe An Friendship General Hospital between January 2021 and August 2025, to investigate cytogenetic abnormalities and to evaluate their association with patients’ clinical and paraclinical characteristics. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was employed to detect cytogenetic abnormalities. Cytogenetic abnormalities were identified in 18 patients (27.3%); Gain/amp(1q) was the most frequently observed abnormality (16.7%), followed by del(13q) (9.1%), del(17p) (3.0%); no IGH gene translocations were detected, and one patient had concurrent del(13q) and gain/amp(1q21). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified three factors significantly associated with the presence of FISH-detected cytogenetic abnormalities, including elevated serum calcium levels (OR = 1.33; p = 0.006), higher ISS stage (OR = 11.82; p = 0.009), and elevated ALP levels (OR = 1.18; p = 0.025).
