Surgical correction of aortic coarctation in neonates: Outcomes at Vietnam National Children's hospital

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of surgical repair for neonates diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta at Heart Center, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital from January 2016 to April 2025. A total of 136 neonates who underwent surgical treatment for aortic coarctation were enrolled in the study. The median age at surgery was 13 days old (IQR: 8 – 19.5 days), and the median weight was 3 kg (range: 2.6 – 3.5 kg). There were no spinal cord injuries, and 2 patients (1.5%) had vocal cord paralysis. There were 7 in-hospital deaths (5.1%), no late death. Surgical repair for coarctation of the aorta in the neonatal period can be safely performed with good survival rate. Regular check-ups with recurrent coarctation and systemic hypertension are essential.
