Morphometric characteristics and associated factors of the basilar artery on multidetector computed tomography at Viet Duc University Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the morphometric characteristics of the basilar artery and associated factors in 173 cranial computed tomography scans performed at Viet Duc University Hospital. The mean basilar artery length was 24.19 ± 4.02 mm. The mean diameters at the origin, mid-portion, and termination were 3.50 ± 0.55 mm, 3.23 ± 0.49 mm, and 3.66 ± 0.64 mm, respectively, with an overall mean diameter of 3.46 ± 0.51 mm. Basilar artery dimensions were significantly greater in males than in females (p < 0.05). No association was found between age and basilar artery length. In females, the origin diameter was significantly larger in the elderly group than in the middle-aged group (p = 0.040). In males, the mid-portion diameter was significantly greater in the elderly group than in the middle-aged group (p = 0.017). These findings indicate significant sex-related differences in basilar artery dimensions, whereas age-group differences were observed only in specific arterial diameter measurements after sex-stratified analysis.
