Association between social frailty and geriatric syndromes in older outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract
Social frailty is an important aspect of geriatrics and is associated with many adverse outcomes in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 602 outpatients aged ≥ 60 years old with T2DM at the Endocrinology Clinic of Thong Nhat Hospital. The prevalence of social frailty according to the Makizako questionnaire was 29.1%. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, older age, lower educational level, frailty according to the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), cognitive impairment, insomnia, falls, and poor nutritional status were independently associated with social frailty. Social frailty was a relatively common condition among older outpatients with T2DM. Screening for social frailty may assist early identification of high-risk patients early thus guide appropriate interventions.
