Oral healthcare motivations and oral indicators in primary school students in Hanoi

Abstract
Motivation for oral health care is an aspect that has not been extensively studied, as well as its relationship with oral disease. This descriptive cross-sectional, purposive sampling study was conducted on 354 third-grade students at Kim Lien Primary School and Khuong Thuong Primary School, Hanoi. The study results showed that students at both schools mainly belonged to the extrinsic group (93.2%). The overall caries rate at both schools was 83.3% (CI 95%: 79,1 - 86,9). The average motivation score of Khuong Thuong was higher than Kim Lien (15.81 ± 1.53 vs. 15.03 ± 1.56; p < 0.001). The average OHI-S score of Kim Lien was higher than Khuong Thuong (1.70 ± 0.45 vs. 1.13 ± 0.57; p < 0.001). Motivation scores did not differ according to caries status or OHI-S classification. Simple calculus index (CI-S) was higher in the intrinsic group than in the extrinsic group (p = 0.004).
