Abstract

This study aimed to describe serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status and analyze factors associated with 25(OH)D deficiency in women with primary osteoporosis. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 203 women with primary osteoporosis at Huu Nghi Hospital. 25(OH)D deficiency was defined as a serum concentration < 30 ng/mL, and associated factors were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. The mean serum 25(OH)D concentration was 25.48 ± 7.76 ng/mL, and the prevalence of 25(OH)D deficiency was 72.4% (147/203). Among patients receiving osteoporosis treatment, the prevalence was 70.7% (70/99). After multivariable adjustment, sunlight exposure on fewer than 3 days per week (aOR = 2.74) and exposed skin limited to the face and hands (aOR = 3.91) were independently associated with 25(OH)D deficiency. 25(OH)D deficiency was common among women with primary osteoporosis, including those receiving treatment. These findings indicate that risk assessment, serum 25(OH)D testing, assessment of vitamin D status, vitamin D supplementation counseling, and appropriate sunlight exposure are necessary in the management of primary osteoporosis.
