The correlation between serum psa concentration and bone metastasis in prostate cancer

Abstract

This is a retrospective, descriptive study of 77 patients with prostate cancer admitted to the Department of Urologic Surgery, National Cancer Hospital. The percentage of patients with PSA concentration > 20 ng/mL was 40.2%. Of 77 patients, the rate of bone metastasis of patients with serum PSA level > 20 ng/mL, PSA 10-20 ng/mL, and PSA < 10ng/mL were 35.1%, 15.5%, and 3.9%, respectively. 42 patients had bone metastasis on bone scintigraphy, 27 of whom had serum PSA level >20 ng/mL (64,2%). Of these 27 patients, most had ≥ 2 bone metastasis (n = 26). There was a correlation between the total PSA concentration and the number of bone lesions on bone scintigraphy with r = 0.63. To sum up, total PSA concentration has prognostic value in bone scintigraphy. Thus, bone scintigraphy should be an indicator for early detection of bone metastasis in prostate cancer patients with high serum PSA level.
