Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate risk factors predicting the development of alcohol withdrawal delirium; 56 patients in E hospital were divided into 2 groups of 28 patients each, diagnosed for mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol abuse : group 1 has withdrawal state with delirium (F10.4) and group 2 has withdrawal state (F10.3) according to ICD - 10 criteria; this is a retrospective, case - control study; result showed that the duration of drinking - between 10 and 20 years (OR = 10.8; 95% CI: 1.25 - 93.4), age onset of drinking - before 30 years old (OR = 3.47; 95%CI: 1.11 - 10.75); the amount of daily alcohol intake - above 500ml (OR = 25.04; 95%CI: 5.73 - 108.91) emerged as strong predictors for alcohol withdrawal delirium. These alcohol dependence risk factors can be easily evaluated in a clinical setting to identify patients at risk for developing alcohol withdrawal delirium for physician to develop an intensive therapy plan for treatment.
