26. Preliminary result of group-based psychotherapy for people with depression in Thai Nguyen in 2021

Abstract

Depression is a common emotional disorder with many negative consequences for the community, however, it can be managed with group psychological intervention. The first study conducted in Vietnam aims to evaluate the initial result of group-based psychotherapy for depression in Thai Nguyen in 2021. This is an intervention study without a control group, followed up before and after the intervention, conducted in 10 commune in Thai Nguyen city from August 2020 to December 2021. Group intervention includes 8 sessions of behavioral activation therapy on 359 people aged 18 - 65 with PHQ-9 score ≥ 10. Evaluation before and after intervention using PHQ-9 scale (assessment of depression), Q-LES-Q-SF (quality of life) and BRCS (resilience). After 3 months of intervention, the depression score decreased by an average of 8.32 with ES = 2.47. The rate of depression dropped significantly from 100% to 49.4%, the difference before and after was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Factors affecting depression including quality of life andadaptability also improved significantly after intervention.
